What is UCEED – and Why Does It Matter Today?
Design is no longer just about making things look good. In today’s world, every sector – from technology and healthcare to government and retail – needs designers. Whether it is product design, UI/UX, branding, digital experiences, animation, automotive design, fashion, or service design, the demand for trained designers has never been higher.
Every app you use, every brand you trust, every startup that grows – behind all of them is a designer who shaped the experience. Governments are investing in innovation. Companies are building design teams. Startups are putting user experience at the centre of their products. This is making design one of the fastest-growing and most future-proof career fields in India and globally.
And UCEED – the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design – is your gateway into this world through India’s most prestigious institutions: the IITs.
Conducted by IIT Bombay on behalf of the Ministry of Education, UCEED offers admission to the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme at participating IITs. If you are a student who thinks visually, observes the world keenly, and wants to build a career that is both creative and technically grounded, UCEED 2027 is the exam you should be preparing for.
This guide covers everything you need to know about UCEED 2027 – exam date, eligibility criteria, syllabus, exam pattern, top colleges accepting UCEED score, and preparation tips – all in one place.

UCEED 2027 Eligibility Criteria
Before applying, every candidate must satisfy all three conditions below. Missing even one condition will make you ineligible.
1. Age Limit
| Category | Eligibility Condition |
| General / EWS / OBC-NCL | Born on or after October 1, 2001 |
| SC / ST / PwD | Born on or after October 1, 1995 (5-year relaxation) |
2. Number of Attempts – Read This Carefully
This is one of the most misunderstood rules in UCEED eligibility. Here is exactly how it works:
- A candidate can attempt UCEED a maximum of two times only.
- The two attempts must be in consecutive years – no gap is allowed between attempts.
- Eligibility is tied to your Class 12 year, not to when you first write UCEED.
How the attempt rule works in practice:
If you first appeared for Class 12 in 2026, your eligible UCEED years are:
- UCEED 2026
- UCEED 2027
Even if you did not attempt UCEED 2026, you cannot attempt UCEED 2028. Your window closes at UCEED 2027 because eligibility is linked to the Class 12 year – not to when you first sit for the exam.
Example:
| Class 12 First Appearance | Can Attempt UCEED in |
| 2025 | 2025 and 2026 only |
| 2026 | 2026 and 2027 only |
| 2027 | 2027 only (first attempt) |
Important: If you passed Class 12 in 2025, you are most likely NOT eligible for UCEED 2027. Your window would have been UCEED 2025 and UCEED 2026. Always verify your specific case at uceed.iitb.ac.in.
Also note – UCEED score is valid for one year only, for admissions in the same academic year.
3. Qualifying Examination – Stream & Subject Requirements
Basic condition:
- The candidate should have passed Class XII (or equivalent) in 2026, OR be appearing in 2027 for the first time.
Stream eligibility – important distinction by IIT campus:
Not all IITs have the same stream requirement. This is a critical detail that many students miss:
| IIT Campus | Stream Requirement |
| IIT Bombay | All streams – Science, Commerce, Arts all eligible |
| IIT Delhi | All streams – Science, Commerce, Arts all eligible |
| IIT Hyderabad | All streams – Science, Commerce, Arts all eligible |
| IIT Indore | All streams – Science, Commerce, Arts all eligible |
| IIT Roorkee | PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) in Class 12 required |
| IIT Guwahati | PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) in Class 12 required |
| IIITDM Jabalpur | PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) in Class 12 required |
Key takeaway: If you are from Commerce or Arts stream, you can still crack UCEED and get admission to IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, or IIT Indore. However, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, and IIITDM Jabalpur require PCM in Class 12. Always check the individual IIT’s admission requirements before counselling.
There is no minimum percentage requirement for appearing in UCEED. However, individual IITs may set their own minimum marks for final B.Des admission – check the respective IIT’s admission policy.
UCEED 2027 Application Fee
Based on the fee structure of previous years. Exact 2027 fees will be confirmed in the October 2026 brochure.

| Female / SC / ST / PwD candidates | ₹2,000 |
Application fee once paid is non-refundable. Always confirm the exact fee at uceed.iitb.ac.in before submitting.

1. Start with Previous Year Papers Download UCEED past year question papers from uceed.iitb.ac.in. Understanding actual question style and difficulty is the most important first step.
2. Strengthen Visual Thinking Daily UCEED heavily tests visual perception and spatial ability. Observe everyday objects – notice shapes, proportions, materials, and how things are designed. Carry a sketchbook everywhere.
3. Attack NAT Questions First – Zero Negative Marking NAT questions carry 4 marks each with zero negative marking. These 14 questions are your safest scoring opportunity. Always attempt all of them.
