This guide is based on the published NID Admissions Handbooks 2027–28 and available amendments. Always check the official portal for the latest instructions before submitting your application.

Before You Start: 3 Decisions to Make

Before registering, understand which programme you want to apply for, how many M.Des disciplines you wish to select, and which examination city you prefer.

1. Which admission route should you choose?
NID offers different admission pathways depending on your educational qualification and the programme you want to pursue.

Route 1: 5.5-Year Integrated M.Des
Students can apply to NID Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, or Gandhinagar after Class 12 and earn a Master’s degree through this integrated pathway.

Route 2: B.Des / Integrated M.Des
Students can apply to NID Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, or Assam for the respective undergraduate or integrated programmes.

Already a graduate?

Graduates can apply for the regular M.Des programme, which has a duration of 2.5 years at the relevant campuses.

Important: Choose your programme carefully before registering. The Programme Applied In field is locked after signup, and the application process does not permit you to combine the programme routes described above. Check the relevant handbook for the precise eligibility and application rules.

2. M.Des: which disciplines can you choose?
NID groups its M.Des disciplines into five groups based on related fields, along with a special category called Group X.

Group X includes four cross-disciplinary specialisations:

  • Design Trends and Futures
  • Design Education
  • Strategic Design Management
  • Universal Design

You can apply for up to three disciplines (one, two, or three).

  • One discipline – any one, from any group
  • Two disciplines – both from the same group, or one regular discipline + one from Group X
  • Three disciplines – two from the same group + one from Group X

Application fee: The fee is charged per discipline. For General-category applicants, choosing three disciplines costs ₹9,000.

Choose carefully because your application is tied to your selected disciplines, and changes may not be permitted after the applicable deadline.

Note: NID Madhya Pradesh has a separate application form and application link. The programme permits selection of only one discipline: Experience Design, Design for Care, or Textile Design. The supplied 24 September 2026 amendment states that each discipline has 12 seats. Check the official NID admissions website for the applicable handbook, amendments, fees, and application link.

3. Which test city should you choose?
DAT Prelims 2027 runs in 17 cities (Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jorhat, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna). Your centre can only be changed during the 1–3 December correction window – never after.

Step-by-Step: Filling the NID 2027 Application

Step 1 – Read the handbook first.
Visit admissions.nid.edu and download the handbook for your chosen programme.

Read the eligibility criteria, programme details, document requirements, fee structure, and examination schedule before beginning your application.

During registration, you will be asked to confirm that you have read and understood the handbook.

Step 2 – Register with your email ID and mobile number
Open the registration page and enter the requested details, including your name, date of birth, programme, category, email address, and mobile number.

Keep the following details accurate:

Certificate Validity and Document Requirements (2027)

GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL certificates:

The certificate requirements supplied for this guide specify that GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL certificates must be issued on or after 1 April 2026, based on the applicable income criteria for FY 2025–26, and follow the prescribed Central Government format.

Download the relevant certificate format from the official NID admissions portal and check that your certificate meets the requirements for your programme.

PwD candidates:

Candidates applying under the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category must upload the valid disability documentation specified by NID. The registration instructions refer to a Disability Certificate issued by the District Chief Medical Officer and/or a UDID card issued by the relevant department.

Eligible candidates covered by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, may receive 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour, subject to the applicable guidelines and approval requirements.

NID states that details about scribe services will be announced separately. Due to the nature of the examination, candidates must attempt the subjective sections of DAT Prelims and DAT Mains without a scribe.

Certificates in other languages: Certificates issued in a language other than English or Hindi require a notarised translation.

Step 5 – Pay the fee (online). Your application is complete only when you can view and download the auto-generated application form. Save it, save your login credentials and application number, and keep printed copies of the confirmation page – you’ll need them at admit-card download, Mains and document verification.

Step 6 – The correction window (1–3 December). The published correction window is scheduled as follows:

  • Opens: 4 PM, Tuesday, 1 December 2026
  • Closes: 11:59 PM, Thursday, 3 December 2026

During this period, you can correct eligible application details, including your examination city, subject to the portal’s rules.

The following fields remain locked:

  • Programme applied for
  • Candidate’s name
  • Date of birth
  • Registered email address
  • Registered mobile number

The 15 September 2026 amendment also addresses changes to category and gender. If you change your category or gender during the permitted window, an additional fee may be payable. Excess fees are not refunded, and requests to change category or gender are not permitted after the window closes.

Tip: Review every field carefully during the correction window. Do not assume that a locked field can be changed later by contacting the admissions office.

NID DAT 2027: Important Dates and Admission Process

  • Admit card: Available from 4 PM on 10 December 2026.
  • DAT Prelims: Sunday, 20 December 2026. The exam is pen-and-paper; the duration will be mentioned on the admit card. There is no negative marking, and Prelims scores are used only to shortlist candidates for Mains.
  • Prelims results:
    • M.Des: 4 PM, 16 February 2027.
    • B.Des / Integrated M.Des pathway: 4 PM, 16 March 2027.
  • DAT Mains: Dates to be announced.

Important: Don’t miss the final admission application. After the Mains results, shortlisted candidates must submit a separate online admission application within the specified deadline for seat allotment. Missing this step can make you ineligible for admission across NID campuses, regardless of their rank.

Accuracy note: The dates and result schedule should be checked against the official NID 2027–28 admissions website. Verify the claims about negative marking and the consequences of missing the separate admission application against the official handbook before publishing.

7 Mistakes That Get NID Applications Rejected

Even a strong candidate can face problems if the application is incomplete or contains incorrect information. Avoid these common mistakes.

1. Entering incorrect details during signup

Your name, date of birth, programme, registered email address, and mobile number are locked after signup. Check them carefully before proceeding.

2. Uploading an unsuitable photograph

Use a recent passport-size colour photograph that meets the portal’s specifications. Avoid unclear, cropped, or poorly lit images.

3. Uploading an invalid category certificate

Check the issue date, prescribed format, income-year requirements, and other eligibility conditions for your category.

4. Selecting incompatible M.Des disciplines

Review the discipline-group rules before choosing one, two, or three disciplines. Do not assume you can change your choices later.

5. Stopping before successful payment and submission

Filling in the form is not enough. Confirm that the payment is successful and that the application form is generated.

6. Losing access to your registered contact details

Keep your registered email address and mobile number active. Monitor your inbox and spam folder for admit-card notifications, results, and other important updates.

7. Waiting until the last day

Avoid submitting your application at the last minute. Technical problems, slow portal response, or payment delays may prevent timely submission. Apply early enough to resolve any issues.
